Brunswick Branch Library Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary
Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) will celebrate 10 years of serving the Brunswick community in its current building at 915 North Maple Avenue, Brunswick. Staff will honor the anniversary with decorations at the branch and party favors (while supplies last) for all customers dropping by Curbside Pickup now through Saturday, April 17, 2021.
Brunswick Branch Library first opened to the public on April 20, 1963 at 317 Brunswick Street, in the old West End School. The branch was then replaced with the second Brunswick Library which opened on April 9, 1989 at the current location. The renovated branch opened on April 16, 2011 and was Frederick County’s first LEED Certified Building. In the ten years since it has been open, the library has circulated 1,586,611 books, tv shows, music, movies, and more. As a community hub, it has hosted 128,831 attendees at its 5,447 children’s programs over the past ten years.
“While our library building is celebrating its tenth birthday this week, we’re also celebrating being part of the Brunswick community for almost sixty years,” said Jenny Diaz, Branch Administrator at Brunswick. “We are grateful for the supportive community that make working here so fulfilling and can’t wait to celebrate with everyone at Curbside Pickup this week!”
Beyond the standard library materials available at the branch, Brunswick also houses the Myer Kaplon Photograph Collection which includes over 2,200 photographs taken by Brunswick resident, Myer Kaplon, between 1940 and 1978. The photographs document people, businesses, and town events, including the longstanding Veterans Day Parade.
Since 2018, the library has also offered fishing poles that can be checked out for free by library card holders. The program began with the help of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and has been supported by Brunswick Sports & Apparel. Customers may borrow two fishing poles at a time for up to one week. Fishing licenses are required for anyone over the age of 16 and are available at Brunswick Sports & Apparel (302 W Potomac St., Brunswick).
