Brunswick Area Recreation Council (BARC) proudly presents the 19th Annual Scottish First Footing on NEW YEAR’S EVE, December 31, 2020 at 11:45 pm in Square Corner Park at 1 East Potomac Street, Brunswick Maryland.

The Frederick Drums & Pipes will perform several selections and at 12:00 am they will play Auld Lang Syne to ring in the New Year.  They will also bring a Blessing to the City of Brunswick and to all who attend.

While New Year’s Eve is celebrated around the world, the Scots have a long rich heritage associated with this event and have their own name for it, Hogmanay.  The tradition says that if the first person to cross your threshold on New Year’s Eve is a man, it will bring good luck to the household.  A woman or fair-haired man is always considered bad luck.  The man brings a bottle of drink (usually Scotch) to ensure plenty to drink in the coming year, a cake to ensure plenty to eat, and a lump of coal so you will have heat and be able to cook throughout the New Year.

No matter how cold, rainy, or snowy it is, this event will happen.  So come out and bring a bell to ring in the New Year while listening to the Frederick Drums and Bagpipes.

All Covid 19 Restrictions will be followed:  Masks are required, Social Distancing expected, nobody will be allowed in Square Corner Park (stay in you vehicle and roll down the window), and any new requirements will be observed.  If in the events we are required to CANCEL, it will be on our Facebook Page or at barcmd.com.

Brunswick Area Recreation Council (BARC) is part of the Association of Park and Recreation Council of Frederick County, Maryland.  BARC represents the Southwest part of Frederick County, Maryland and meets the second Monday of the month at Brunswick Merryland Park at 10:00 am.  More information can be obtained on Brunswick Area Recreation Council’s Facebook page and at barcmd.com.
