Who is Brunswick Main Street?
We are a non-profit organization working to revitalize downtown Brunswick as an attractive and lively city center. We will protect our historic architecture, strengthen our businesses, preserve our parks and green spaces and honor our history.
Is Brunswick Main Street associated with the Maryland Main Street Program and the National Main Street Organization?
Yes. Main Street Maryland is a downtown revitalization program created in 1998 by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The program strengthens the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and neighborhoods. Using a competitive process, Main Street Maryland selects communities who have made a commitment to succeed, and helps them improve the economy, appearance, and image of their traditional downtown business districts.
Under the Main Street America umbrella, Main Street Maryland coordinates the local Main Street organizations, of which Brunswick Main Street is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
How Long has Brunswick Main Street Existed?
We received our Main Street designation in the Spring of 2004.
How does Main Street Revitalize Downtown?
We have applied for grants for façade and interior improvements, funded advertising projects for downtown businesses, promoted public art downtown, funded $11,000 to local businesses with the COVID relief Micro grant program, worked with the city to beautify downtown with planters and the fresh painting of the Square Corner Park mural, and we are working on promoting a bike friendly community with bike racks, bike lanes, and an easier way to get from the towpath into town!
Currently, we are working on other projects to help the revitalization process as well. Stay tuned for how you can help!
What is the Committee Structure for Brunswick Main Street?
Brunswick Main Street focuses on preserving our historic character and enhancing the image of downtown through four major avenues (Promotions, Economic Restructuring, Design, and Organization) to achieve our goals. These four avenues represent the committee structure recommended by Main Street America, which has been utilized by many main streets across the nation.
Main Street has a volunteer board of directors comprised of residents, business owners, and community leaders. It employs one full-time manager to handle the administration and management of the program. Volunteers interested in revitalizing historic Brunswick carry out programs and activities.
Do you ever sponsor events?
YES! We have sponsored and organized lots of events. This past year we started the Farmers Market, which was a huge success and prior to that we have hosted Wine and Chocolate Walk, Potomac Street Mile, and A Taste of Brunswick to highlight just a few.
How will you be helping downtown in the future?
Brunswick Main Street will be working hard to continue supporting the small businesses, especially during this challenging time. We listen to our business owners by having roundtable meetings every Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. to determine their needs and do our best to support them. We will also continue to work with the City to seek funding for various revitalization projects downtown. We will be focusing on volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and a corporate campaign so that all of our efforts are sustainable. AND along the way we will be partnering with local organizations to celebrate the Canal’s 50th anniversary and many more events when COVID regulations allow us to do so.
